Islander 21 ~ first sailboat!

So we've decided on a 1966 Islander 21 as our first sailboat. We love the lines and large flat deck and think she's just perfect to learn how to sail on. I have a nice list of things I want to complete prior to launch but a recent back injury has put me on the "bench" so we may just need to do the bare minimum, launch her and continue work while at sea.

Fun! Need some pics of the cockpit though. Better get moving or the weather will turn cold again!

So I will be cutting the list down to be able to launch her around May 24 - 25.

Here is what I hope to accomplish this week:

*Wash - Compound - Polish & Wax hull
*Scrape, Grind & Prep Keel
*Anti-Foul Keel
*Clean & Polish Mast
*Sand & Varnish Cabin Door
*Tune-Up and Install New Throttle Cable on Mariner 9 HP Kicker
*Repair Jib Sail (Or find a good used replacement)

..... LaUnCh!!!

So I spent a few hours yesterday on the hull. I started with my buffer and a good compound and quickly found that I needed something stronger. I decided to give her a little wet sand. The results are awesome for her being 44 years old with original paint. However, she has no gloss or shine at all. I tried polishing and waxing her but still, no shine. Any secrets out there???

Click for picture slidehow of hull:

Note - the dark area is where I polished and waxed. There is still no shine and does not feel "waxed."

Good luck on the Islander

I have had my 1968 Islander 21 for four years and loved it. I am moving on to a 1963 Pearson Ariel. The 21 Islander needs to find a new home. It is for sale in Minnesota. It has a trailer with extension. The only problem is that it will need paint.

Good luck with the sale but there is a classified thread on the forums for this.

I started grinding don the keel today. Man what a mess!! I decided to completely sand it down and now want to coat with a rust converter/preventer. Any suggestions?

What is your keel made of? Mine is internal and lead and I don't think lead rusts.
