Re: strut bearing replacement for Ib30

Hi There: I had a marina replace my cutlass bearing on my I-28 this spring and they pulled the shaft as well. You will have to remove 2 set screws that should be holding the bearing in the strut before attempting the removal. Then you have to cut the old bearing lengthwise with a hack saw or saws all without cutting into the strut itself. After making the cut through the bronze material, you carefully bend in the cut ends of the old bearing to free it up. The old bearing should now come out. Then you carefully clean out the strut but don't be aggressive with anything abrasive, just clean out any corrosian (sp?). The new bearing will be a press fit and if you look up cutlass bearing replacement on the internet, you can find plans to make a simple bearing puller to pull the new bearing into the strut. Before sliding in the new bearing, don't forget to re-thread the set screw holes with the appropriate tap and replace the old set screws with new ones. Then re fit the shaft using water as a lubricant in the new rubber bearing. Don't use any other form of lubrication as it may affect the rubber bearing material. Be carefull not to nick the rubber either, with the end of the shaft that attaches to the transmission as it will have a key way in it that could cut the rubber as well.

Good Luck.
