Islander 30 fuel tank size
Sorry to pester this forum with questions, but the boat I'm buying is 200 miles away and I can't get to it easily. According to the boat survey, the fuel tank holds 10 gallons. However, I have found a few entries on other sites selling Islander 30's that claim a 20 gallon tank. The boat is a 1983 Bahama. Is it possible that the fuel tank size was an option?

Re: Islander 30 fuel tank size
It's entirely possible that there were options.. but not all that common - usually the option was an second tank for more capacity. It's equally possible that someone retrofitted a newer tank - often such tanks are necessarily smaller because you can't slide in as big a tank as original for clearance/access issues (the originals are installed before they put the deck on the boat)

Also, for boats primarily daysailed a smaller tank lessens the risk of stale fuel as the entire contents are recycled more frequently.

Re: Islander 30 fuel tank size
I appreciate the response but still don't know the basic answer: is the standard a 10 or 20 gallon tank?

Re: Islander 30 fuel tank size
Ten gallons is pretty small.. I'd guess that 20 was the original spec.. but it's just a guess.

Re: Islander 30 fuel tank size
The I-28's fuel tank is a 20 gal.

Re: Islander 30 fuel tank size
Of the I-30s on YW the listed fuel capacity varies between 20-25 usg.. in any event this data could be guesswork/estimates all around. 20 is much more likely as a stock original design intention. It's just as possible that the boat in question actually has a 20 gal tank unless it has been replaced and the owner is being honest...

The fuel tank in my '84 I30 Bahama is 20 gal.

Re: Islander 30 fuel tank size
Keep in mind that what is standard is likely of no real value and stated specs may have varied from what was actually installed. If tanks have been replaced, a common issue, then it will be what ever someone put in. There are advantages to smaller tanks, but the big one is that it might have fit someplace easy to get to like a lazarette. The original my have been left (not a great thing) or may have have had to be cut apart to get it out, and a smaller one put in it's place. You can always add more tanks and there is a big advantage to having multiple tanks as it allows you to set up a polishing system. So you fill into one tank, then pump and filter it as you move it to the "day tank." That way if you take on bad fuel (another common thing) you can isolate it and treat it before it gets to the engine.
