I'm sorry but you'll find a marina dominated by sailors, so much so that the company that owns the place laments that it doesn't make as much $ as their powerboat-filled marinas They did let the fuel dock start selling ice cream but I don't think that's quite made up the difference.
We're Altera in #227, at the far end of the same dock as #303. Heading south on Sept 15th but we're living aboard and mostly here installing/fixing stuff until then.
Try to make it to the boater year-end party on Sept 13. It's usually a pretty good time with a ton of food.
We were at last-year's event as we have friends at the marina. It was a blast: a costume affair. I went as Captain 'High' Liner complete with blood-shot eyes and a bag of Doritos.
What was it that Groucho Marx said when he was denied membership in a club because he was Jewish, "I would not want to be a member of any club that would have me as member."
We'll have to call the 200 / 300 dock the "Sailnet dock" We're in 319. Look forward to finally meeting.
BTW, thanks for the heart attack. Got the email notification of the post in the Lake Huron forum and only the headline of "Bad news for Bay Moorings boaters" .... I thought maybe Parkbridge was closing up the marina to develop the property.....
Unlikely they would. We just got back from holidays and were contemplating going up to Killbear for a year to try it out, so was more that on my mind. Longer drive but much quieter anchorages.
Parkbridge seem to buy and develop recreation properties, marinas fit right into their profile. I often wonder if they will tear down the buildings in Bay Moorings and put up a condo on the old hotel site and rearrange the site. They have lots of property being wasted with the house and cottages and old hotel site.
Didn't they have concerns over water levels at Killbear last year? (or maybe the year before). I know that we avoided getting fuel or pumpout there because of that.
They had 7' at the fuel dock this year.
We had no problems last year, but we draw 4'-6". This year with water levels up over 12" even better. They have many sailboats our size and bigger for the season, so shouldn't be an issue. I know someone with a Hunter 420 were there for several years.
We were out at Hope on the Aug. long weekend and lost count at 70....... which is 60 over my limit.... hence the thoughts of further north.
We're 2 hours from home, so was our limit at the time. Killbear would be fewer but longer weekends and holiday 2 weeks.
Up until this year, Hope has been a good quiet anchorage for most weekends. July was quiet, but August has been unusually busy. This year has been a bear on trying to figure out where the wind is going overnight and seems to swing 360 deg. over 48 hours. So tough to figure which area to anchor.
Wind is good, but we ended up turning around south of Splitrock 2 weeks ago with pounding waves trying to get north.
Hey Welshman, it's about time you got your arse over to Bay Moorings. Glad to have you with us. I'll look for your boat, will probably be up this weekend, we're at 323. Just got back from a week of floating about. Couldn't believe how much time the wind spent coming from the east or south east. First time I've anchored on the west side of Beckwith. I'm with Scott on figuring where to anchor. Spent Sunday night at west Beckwith but didn't like the chop coming in. So Monday sailed over to the other side of Beckwith, and didn't like the look of that either. Sailed back to Hope and it looked best, so put my money on the wind shifting to the west during the night and dropped anchor. Lost the bet. Wind stayed due South and increased in strength. Not big wind, but enough for an uncomfortable chop. Rough night.
Holy crap - the whole dock are sailnetters! Now I know what Scott was talking about!
I love Hope, but when the wind is wrong mornings are pretty uncomfortable. I stopped there on my way home a couple of weeks ago. It's a convenient staging point for going up the Bay. The place was packed as there was a strong northerly forecast. I got in late and was leaving early so I didn't care. The good thing there is that the shallow water extends quite far off the beach so I anchored in 12 feet at the edge of the crowd. When it's empty though, it's hard to beat Hope Island.
I've scooted across to Christian (Little Sand Bay) which isn't bad.
I like the west side of Beckwith but the east side is usually packed with loud powerboats and you always seem to get the Beckwith Bounce regardless of the wind direction.
This year I tried a spot on Christian a little further west, called: Big Sand Bay. When I was there there were only a few boats. There are cottages on shore but it was still quieter than Beckwith. Good protecion from most wind directions except for North.
Look forward to sharing a few tall tales and tallboys on the dock. Probably this weekend as the weather doesn't look conducive to heading out....
Have to add my 2 cents worth.... even though I am at the 500 dock... 533 to be exact, which is the longest walk in the whole marina...
What's with posting satellite pictures of our favourite anchorages... somebody wants them busier yet? For all those salty boaters: these anchorages have NO tide and NO current, a SANDY bottom with CLEAR water with depths to suit your draft from 0 to 15ft. OOPS, I guess I ruined it even more now....
Just back from the labour day weekend. Weather was a mixed bag, but the company was great. Was up at Bosolie Bay ( or how ever you spell it), with Scott, his lovely wife and his dog Ginger. Ran into Dave ( Welshman ), and his lovely wife, although didn't get as much chance to talk as I wanted. Also ran into many dock mates and friends I haven't seen since the beginning of the season when we were all getting our boats squared away. All in all a very good weekend. Scott thanks for the hospitality. Dave it was great to see you at Bay Moorings. I think your going to like it there.
Anyone else been following Altera ( ChristinaM) currently on the Salty Dawg Rally on their way to BVI's?
Oh, and about this Flyingwelshguy..... not sure he fits in on our dock... noticed his dock lines were all nicely coiled up just like he was at a "Yacht Club" Me, I'm lucky if the get piled neatly when we tie up.....
Sorry we didn't get to meet this season, but we have the reputation on the dock as being the fastest to cast off the lines on arrival and the fastest to be in the car on our way on Sun. night so don't spend much time at the dock ....
I know that Walter (Flandria), Wendy & Paul (Sapphire Breeze), and Eric & Jessie (Aeolian) from the 200/300 dock have been keeping tabs on us It'll probably get a little duller now that we've made it to the BVIs but our blog is at SailingAltera.com. Nothing but sunny beaches and painkillers for the next few months.
Well, good news for fellow BayMooringites.... we pulled the trigger and headed north. Launched Friday ( on a perfectly sunny hot day ) and motored north ( 7 hours in complete windless fog ) and are now docked at Killbear Marina. Sorry, didn't get a chance to meet everyone and will miss friends there, but the lure of the north was too strong. We're going to give the extra hour drive a try and see if the quieter area is worth it.
Sorry I missed you in Penetang. I spend quite a bit of time up around Killbear and north (Shawanaga) most summers. My boat is Sea Dragon and I monitor 16. I'll keep my ears on.
Met up with Chamonix a bit this summer. Great people. Hopefully we can all get together next summer.
Good Grief.... This is the most recent Lake Huron post here - and do we not deserve "our own and proper Georgian Bay" thread? I have been away and now back as FlandriaII - and I seem to recall, Flying Welshman, that you have since already left Bay Moorings for a marina further north. In any case, I hope you are well and enjoying (a hot and dry) summer so far - with enough wind!
Nope, that was me that went North. Not going to tell you where...... cause when I pull out of the marina the whole tension level goes from 100 - zero. I don't have to deal with the 400 northbound Friday night crowd on the water to get anywhere. If I see 2 or 3 boats it's busy. Anchorages have been heaven with a crowded anchorage being 2-3 boats and mostly 0 in May to late June.
I've had more hours of sailing and in areas of zero traffic this year than 7 years down there. You can check with Chamonix and Summ'r Funds, they know where we are and have been sworn to absolute secrecy. Any acknowledgement and they will be disavowed.
whiskey tango foxtrot..... just drove through Bay Moorings and was shocked at the ghost town.....
Not too surprised given the size of the property and the potential. I was surprised Parkbridge did not develop it before now. I guess Maple Leaf decided it was worth more to sell than to keep as a marina.
So where is everybody gone now??
