Hey Tim
That is good news that is all I needed (that's what she said too )
I'm splashing next week Tuesday, so I'll be okay then.

EJ, double check before you commit. I am just telling you what I saw and it might just be a temporary thing.

Sailortjk1 If it looks a couple of inches up I should be OK. I was (I mean the water) 2" short and my next door slip neighbor is checking for me a couple of times. I'm going in one way or the other on the 24th. I'll already miss great sailing this coming weekend with temps in the seventies.
If the slip is too shallow I have a back-up slip I can rent closer to the Lake with less river traffic.

Well, EJ is in the water now at RNYC, just thought I'd update the conversation for everybody who hasn't seen his boat already. :-)

Paladin27 is right. I'm finally in the water, the boat looks great after all the painting, I didn't drag going up river, and she rocks/floats well in her slip at RNYC. So the water is deep enough.
A little rigging trim, hank-on the sails, and we'll be sailing this weekend.
Life is good.

Happy Lake Michigan sailing for all.

Slip Away Cove is over 8 feet right now. The owner says it normally sits about 7 feet at low water. I think it'll be okay. He's a good guy and the price is great.

EJ's photos are giving me an inferiority complex! Your boat is so much bigger!

Just to bring this thread full circle, we did finally do a Chicago to South Haven sailing trip with Mark's Seidelmann 299. Due to the condition of the boat, we decided to bring it home to South Haven via Michigan City, St. Joseph and finally South Haven. It took 2 days and 24 hours on the water!

Here is the route as recorded on my Android phone via Google My Tracks.

Here's the whole set of photos from the trip. LINK

And finally, a video from the trip! Link

inferiority complex

Hey Paladin27
Just don't stand so far away when you take a picture, it is just an optical illusion that your boat looks smaller
See you this weekend "Harbor Fest"!!!!!!

First Crossing

I spent about five years cruising both Huron and Michigan. As the other posters mentioned, just keep an eye on the weather. There can be times where the lake is entirely flat...you could easily end up motoring across. Or you might caught in an afternoon thunderstorm, which will certainly add to the excitement. Active Captain is a great source of recent local knowledge. Coming from Chicago, a clear night sky in the middle of the lake will be a night you will never forget...if you have never seen the stars from horizon to horizon. I was up in Harbor Springs two weeks ago, and the mayflies seem to have already hatched...its amazing how many pounds of bugs you will accumulate on your boat at night...with the white light on your stern!

Tom
