Books: Florida fiction or truth retold?

If you like Florida references in your fiction try John D. McDonald. His character, Travis McGee lives on a houseboat in Ft. Lauderdale's Bahia Mar Yachtclub. I sailed into Bahia Mar from Tortola a few years back and sure enough, two slips over from our assigned spot was a brass plaque commenorating John D. and his Hero, Travis McGee. If you like his stuff you'll not run out of material for quite some time, he's written over 100 books.

Have any of you read Peter Mathiessen's trilogy about the outlaw Watson at the turn of the century? A good portion of it takes place in the everglades where he develops a successful sugar cane industry, albeit while saving costs by ridding himself of labor.

He recently rewrote the trilogy into one, long novel, Shadow Country. Great reads!

John D. McDonald was the master. His Travis McGee series has been reissued with a foreword by Carl Hiassen. A must read for fans of Florida fiction.

Tom Corcoran does a good crime drama series ala RWW which is centered around Key West. If you've spent enough time there that you've gotten off the Duval crawl and taken in the rest of the island, they're a fun read.

I just finished the John D. MacDonald Travis McGee series. It was about a 12 year project, reading 1 or 2 a year. Loved every minute of it, too bad he's gone. Also love the Doc Ford novels, since i went to Offshore Sailing School on Captiva I act like I know the area.

Big recommendation for the Dorsey novels too.
