Re: rhodes Commodore swiftsure

I remember Brian Ackworth from back in the '60s and '70s when he would visit some of the Seafarer dealers, i.e. my Dad. Good guy, outgoing, positive outlook.

And the Seafarers were the first real foothold my Dad had as a dealer, aside from the wood boats Graves still built in the '60s (Barnegat 20s, 210s). Meridian, Ranger, Swiftsure, others. Later it was Cheoy Lee, Morgan, Islander, Allied. And I was old enough to be the delivery skipper to states with no sales tax, So Marblehead to Rye NH was a route I learned by doing.

Ah, the good old days--gasoline engines, roller reefing, short hobbyhorsing waterlines, no electronics, but God was it fun...

Check out the

Seafarer Research Center. They have background info on the NY built Seafarers and some references to the Dutch built ones.

Re: rhodes Commodore swiftsure

Sorry to not have responded earlier. I have owned a 1959 Rhodes Swiftsure for 16 years now. I've seen the boat through quite a few repairs over these years. It was swept into the woods on Staten Island by Sandy and saw serious damage but also showed how strongly she was built. I decided to save the boat and had her repaired at Cherubini Yachts. Just launched on Friday. I'd be happy to answer any questions...

Re: rhodes Commodore swiftsure

The boat was just launched on the Delaware river north of Philly at the yard where the repairs were done. I do plan on sailing back home to jersey city within a month. If you live nearby you could take a look. Is yours in the water?

Re: rhodes Commodore swiftsure

There is a Swiftsure 33 in a storage yard nearby that has been neglected for years. I'm hoping to get in touch with the owner to see if they are willing to sell. I am hoping (if I can purchase her) to do a re fit in time for retirement, 20+ years from now

Keep us posted on your re fit progress.

Re: rhodes Commodore swiftsure

Cdock, I own a 1964 Swiftsure Commodore in Baltimore, MD area. It's a project boat. A lot of wet core in side decks, and in need of paint and other upgrades, but I love its lines. There's a Seafarer page on Facebook with lots of info, pics, and fellow addicts. Good luck!
