1st dinghy

Hi there,

After work today i am going to go look at what could be my first sail boat! It is a 11' mirror dinghy.....which needs work......I am told it has a soft spot in the hull and i am wondering if anyone could tell me what i need to be looking for. I am somewhat excited about this boat because around here they never come up for sale and being in southeast ak i dont have a lot of options for driving somewhere to find one. The asking price is $500.00 bucks which seems pretty reasonable to me.

Thanks!

-Kelly

What's a "Mirror" dinghy? I'm not familiar with that brand or style.

looks like an over sized Optimist. They even allow spinnakers, looks like fun. Originally stitch and glue plywood construction. Not much to it, so as long as it is solid should be fun. But as most of these things go, to be competitive you have to spend a lot of money!

An absolute classic dinghy... wish it was in California because I'd buy it.

There's a really great book about sailing one from the UK to the Black Sea :

Love the gunter rig.

If you don't find one before the long winter sets in, you could consider building a similar boat:

My dad and 4 of his buddies imported the first 5 Mirrors into the US back in the early seventies. My dad and I built ours one summer and it is what I learned to sail on when I was about 8. My dad's cousin was one of the others and he eventually bought a 1969 C&C Corvette. I did my first off shore passage on that C&C when I was 14.

The Mirror has a huge following in the UK and is a one design race class.

Now we are talkin.....I have a lot of lumber available to me and i have the tools and space available as well. I will have to chew on this and decide if it is the route for me.
