Good on you and it looks like you had fun

To be honest, I found the boys of mine that came out the first few times in "not much wind" took to sailing far better than the two that came out in a (to me) nice ten-to-fifteen knots. They got use to the tippy nature of four people in a dinghy before the wind was enough to make that an actual issue. That said, you're boys are somewhat older than mine were when we started

Good for you & your boys!
I happen to think that a low wind day for a first sail on a Lightning is a good thing. It is kind of amazing how little wind it takes to make a Lightning move, if just a bit. Good first lesson. did you fly the chute(spinnaker) or wasn't there enough wind?
The lessons will change as the wind speeds increase.
I watched Lightnings race in a regatta yesterday on the Hudson river in about 20 knots of wind.

no spinnaker yet, haven't got that far. They were amazed how little wind made that craft move. what a blast

Re: Boys first time out on Lightning

Sounds like you had too little wind for a spinnaker anyway.
The Lightning is a blast.
You can look forward to getting her up on a plane on a broad reach in about 15 knots with just jib & main.

Lightnings are a blast.. and the perfect boat to teach kids how to sail. Looks like you had a great time!
