More what's this rigging questions

I raised the mainsail this weekend. Not sure what this rigging is on the boom. I believe a guy at work who sails said the boat has a jiffy reef setup.



There are two blocks mounted rigid to the boom and two loops mounted fwd of the blocks to route the coiled line seen coiled on the other side and aft part of boom. Those loops lead to a cleat mounted to the fwd end of boom on the same side of boom as the blocks.

Then....


There is this thin line in a channel on leech of the mainsail it runs maybe 1/4 way up the sail and exits the pocket and there is another plastic keeper just like the one in the picture. What is this for?

Line runs through the grommet then the block to the front of the boom to use as a reefing line. It may run to a cleat on the boom or to a block at the front of the boom and down to a block or cleat on the mast. The first reefing line should always be rigged.
The light line in the sail is a leech line. It should be just tight enough that the sail does not flutter. The jib should have one as well.

The coiled line does not fit through the reefing grommets on the main sail. So not sure if that is what the line hanging on the back of the boom is for.

Looks to me like your boom is set up to have 2 reefing lines set up.
If the line does not fit then replace it with a line that will fit.

What's the coiled line attached to on the other side of the boom?

There should be 2 bails or clips that the bitter end of the reefing line attaches to.
opposite the blocks. I have an eye sewn in mine that attaches to the clip.

Looks like you were set up for two reefing lines. The aft block for the 1st reef, the forward for the second. You pass the lines up the port side of the sail thru the grommet and down thru the block and forward to the cleat. You can pass them thru the bail for your mainsheet if you want to keep them from hanging down, or not, up to you.

If the line doesn't fit thru the block, as Caleb says replace it. It looks old, it's also probably swollen, which may be why it's not fitting through the block.

You can rig both reefing lines, just make sure there's no tension on them when your mainsail is fully raised. Tie them off at the forward cleats. I might use different colored line so you always know which is which. Like Red for 2nd reef..maybe

The reefing line does not run through all the grommets that might be in the sail for the first reef. The end of the reefing line should be tied around the boom (probably with a bowline) near the cheekblock. The other end should go up through the cringle (big grommet) in the leech, then down through the appropriate cheekblock, and up forward to the cleat near the mast, or wherever you have it set up to cleat. The smaller grommets that might be sewn into the sail along the line of the reefs can have sailties or smaller, short lines run through them to tie off any bunches of sail that might flap in the breeze.

I'm thinking the coiled line isn't part of the reefing system. The loop I the bitter end wouldn't allow it to go through the blocks on the boom. My question is the reefing lines are not there. Tie a 1/4" line with bowline to crinkle on luff then bitter end through block mounted aft on boom then through guides and then tied off at the cleat on the fwd end of boom. This makes sense because the main halyard comes down mast and there is a winch and cleat on bottom starboard side. So reefing would be to lower halyard, pull on first reef line to first reef point and tie off reef line to the cleat. Then retension the halyard. Separate sail ties in the small grommets to tidy it all up. Done...

One thought is when running the coiled line could be ran all the way fwd and tensioned to hold the boom fwd... Like a preventor?
