tunning my tartan 30

Ok so I got the keys to my first big boat and the mast is stepped but now I have to tune the rig. Im not totally sure what I am doing. I have done tons of reading and used to tune my hunter 18, although I was always a little unsure about that also. Any instruction, pointers, points in the right direction more than welcome. Also I would welcome any instruction on getting the full battan main in place and the genoa connected to the roller fuller? The PO said he put the battens in place first which I am not sure is necessary. Should I put them in first or as I am hoisting the sail? Should I hook to the boom first then feed into the mast? Etc...?

There is a tool called a Loos Gauge which helps you measure the tension in your standing rigging wires. If you are lucky your PO has one stashed somewhere on your boat.
Google: "Loos Gauge"

As for your sails, it might be easier hoisting your main sail first and then putting the battens in the sail. don't think it really matters as long as you don't rip your sails.

thanks. I am familiar with a loos tool but have no idea what tension I am looking for. Plus I bing things. Never was a huge google fan. Bing loos gauge, its cooler.

My guess is that you would be very lucky to find a Loos Gauge on the boat. Probably about 1 in 25, or less, have them.

There has to be a website community for your boat. Go there and ask the question about tension, rake, etc. Or just do what many do and get the mast in column, tighten the shrouds and backstay, assume that the PO already had the headstay correct, and go sailing. In 10 knots you should be slightly loose on the lee side. If real loose tighten both side a little and try again.
If you get it perfectly tuned you are one of the few, including myself who is anal about it, to get it perfect.

a loss gauge is a great tool, not cheap at $100, but worth it if you value your time and want to get the best out of your rig.

I would agree that a Loos Gauge is a great tool. I have one and love it. However, if you don't know what you need to acheive it is useless. Communicate with other owners.

AB-

You and I have a similar rig. They are single-spreader "telephone pole" rigs.

You have upper shrouds and a single set of lower shrouds. Buy or borrow a Loos Gauge. The gauge has notches cut into the side used to size your rigging, this tells you which scale to use on the gauge.

For our rigs, setting the tension for 15% of breaking strength is normal.

Mine's a little more complicated, as I have forward and aft lower shrouds. Yours should be cake.
