Portland, Oregon - dreams of sailing

I'm looking for advice about offshore sailing in the Pacific Northwest.

The last time I sailed was in '91 as crew on a delivery of a Beneteau from California to Tahiti. I would love to get back into offshore sailing, but what I've heard is the Oregon coast can be quite challenging.

I'm considering mooring a boat somewhere close to Portland, such as Newport. Do any PNW members have any advice for an aspiring sailor?

moorage is cheap in oregon. its what ive heard. the columbia river bar is also known as the graveyard of the pacific so limit your trips over it and be careful, hook up with some portland sailers to get your skills up. where you can do some sailing in an afternoon instead of having to drive out to the coast. I know nothing about the moorage and sailing around newport but I am sure someone will pipe up with better information then I have soon.

Re: Portland, Oregon - dreams of sailing

I used to keep my boat at Tomahawk Bay.
right by the I 5 bridge, very nice, friendly very help full community of boaters.
cost very reasonable.
sailing options are a bit limited. Threre is a small club and sailing school.
Columbia River is beautiful. about 12 hours down to the bar.
Puget sound has more options. but if you are in Portland the river is on your doorstep

Re: Portland, Oregon - dreams of sailing

I have heard that Astoria has the cheapest moorage on the entire west coast. I believe a guy I know pays $90 a month for a 40 footer. That might be good for you. Closer than Newport, and closer to Juan de Fuca for when you sail north. Mccuddy's in Portland is also close and cheap.

All things considered, isn't Olympia not much further? 2 hours? Another option.
