Your small boat experience counts
I sat for the 50 ton master with a guy whose only experience was on his 14 ft day sailor and they accepted his time. He had no previous license. The Guard determines what tonage you get but I was told that they don't give out less than 25 ton if you pass the test no matter what you sail.
My wife and I want to start delivering sailboats. Another skipper told me that many insurance companies won't cover the boat unless the delivery skipper holds the master level. If he is correct, an upgrade to the master is worth the trouble.
If I recall correctly, you need 360 days, 4 hours or more, in charge of a boat. I think you can include time from not-so-recent years but to renew after five years you need to have accumulated another 360 days in that 5 year period. I may be wrong (I am married therefore usually am) so check to be sure.
