Most all of Jon's posts have been in reference to a Bayfield 25, which is a full keel/attached rudder hull.

Yes, Faster, that's correct - I stand corrected in my little bit of ignorance (I'm still learning what's what). I had, apparantly, mis-interpreted a rudder attached to the keel as a skeg rudder - that's my error. My apologies.

Knowing that, if anyone's still up to providing guidance, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks!

Sincerely,

/s/ Jon C. Munson II

Ahh... in that case, backing the boat may be a copper-plated bitch...

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Bayfield 25' Backing Problems

CAPT.

As with many of the replies, throttle modulation is the key in backing any Rudder or Keel configuration. Playing the wind as opposed to fighting it is also important. Any Captain should know you need flow of water over the rudder for stearage.

Three years ago I delivered an Island Packet 29', FULL KEEL and the first time I piloted one, from Rock Hall MD to Solomon Island. The helm went dead, even in forward, without PROP WASH.

The best advice is LOCAL KNOWLEDGE. When I come to a new port I ask friends what to watch for or radio other vessels in the area. When I pilot a vessel configuration I'm not familiar with I ask someone who is.

Fair Winds and Tides!
