The Auxiliary (like the L.A. flotilla above) and the US Power Squadron (which has more sailors in it than you'd think) are both free and excellent ways to learn basic navigation and piloting skills. What you learn in these classes you'll use every day if you go cruising, distance racing, or even day sailing.

A great starting place for nautical chart knowledge is Chart No. 1 It is inexpensive and you don't need to go to a classroom. Good winter time reading, too.

I just visited the above link and the 99 page "USA Nautical Chart Symbols Abbrviations and Terms" is free for download - I just printed 99 PDF pages at work:-)
