docking

I agree with tommyt, Have used Captain Jack's method for the last three years. Saved my marriage- I was ready to divorce the first mate and keep the boat!
If a five foot, 50 year old broad can bring in a boat in different conditions- there's hope! If you are close to Strictly Sail shows, Captain Jack does seminars there and sells his book that is well worth the purchase price. Otherwise contact Quantum sails. Practice if possible when your marina isn't so busy and in normal weather conditions to gain confidence. Good Luck

A guy that owns a boat that is in a slip next to mine, has been sailing for over 15 years and has never been able to "park" his boat!!!

It helps that he is a really nice guy and an excellent sailor (except for mooring), and because of that, when he comes in or leaves, we all rush to help him in and/or out.

He hits all the boats and fingers from his slip all the way to the marina exit. We nickname him "Pinball Manoel", and he knows about it!!

Because of his "handicap", Pinball Manoel, aware of his inabilities, "surrounds" his boat with fenders!!! He has 6 fenders on the side of his finger, and 3 large ball shaped fenders on port, where is neighbour is. because sometimes we aren't there.

He placed 2 dock bumpers where is bow hits, and 2 on the side.

This of course should only be the last resource. He still hits everyone in and out, but the fenders somehow provide gracious help.

He points his boat (sometimes we wonder at what), and slowly lets it come to a stop. He then jumps out and has pre-made lines that he just fits over the cleats.

We still rush to help him, when he comes in/out, but only to help. We no longer fear for our boats.

That's awesome Giulietta! We have a large power boat in our marina with a series of wheels overhanging the sides of his fingers port and starboard. He just points the bow in andricochets down the slip till he stops himself on a spring preset to the correct length. No damage and gets it done.

Number one rule of parking a boat - "Slow is Pro". If you have trouble with manouevering, try picturing the boat from above including the location of it's pivot point.

A good rule that I've recently seen (perhaps in this forum) is that you should not approach a dock any faster than you wish to hit it.

Goodnews- another variation is "never approach a slip faster than your checkbook can afford."
