What kind of furling sail are you talking about?
A boom furling main sail will allow you to drop the main halyard, and in fact requires it be dropped to furl. A mast-furling main will not, unless the sail is fully unfurled first. The same applies to a jib halyard and roller furled jib.
On a mast-furled main, I don't think any normal amount of pressure on the outhaul will bother it. On a boom-furled main, it may affect the furling performance.
Are you chartering or do you own the boat. I doubt the charter company will allow you to add telltales to their sails.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.
