What educational books would you recommend

In the meantime what educational books would you recommend for the eager absolute beginner sailor?

David Seidman's "The Complete Sailor". I recommend it and give it to most of the non-sailors I know that are interested in learning about sailing. Well-written, fairly comprehensive, and with good drawings.

"The Complete Sailor" is an excellent book, but it can be over-kill if you are starting from scratch. I would recommend trying to find the ASA
"Basic Keelboat Sailing Standard" (101) text book. It just covers the basics and would be a good starting point.

I'm in the same situation and I complied a list of bboks from the general thread - sticky. I've seen the Complete Salior book by Seidman mentiioned, and the ASA 101 course book makes sense. I also saw these two mentioned often:

Chapman Piloting, Seamanship and Small Boat Handling by Chapman
The Best of Sail Trim by Mann (or Mason?)

Well the Coast Guard here in San Diego offers free classes and I believe the book they use is – Boating Skills and Seamanship – United States Coast Guard Auxiliary – As taught to 3.5 million boaters. I just bought it for $25 it’s a nice text book and looks like it covers Boating skills & Seamanship and Boating Skills & Seamanship II

Chapman's is more of a reference than a teaching book... not really all that well written if you're trying to learn to sail. Seidman is far better.

Best of Sail Trim is for racing, and if you don't know the basics, all it will do is confuse you. Have to have a foundation before you can start to finish the roof.

just get your butt to a sailing school and talk with the people there..
chance are they have what you need there...

Ha will do captain, I just had to get this book for the classes, I figure I get in these classes and get familiar with the words and then grab one of these sailing classes in a month or so, sound good ?

Since he is probably too modest to promote his own work...may I suggest John Rousmaniere's Annapolis Book of Seamanship as the place to begin.
