Sea Scouts

Sea Scouts is part of the Boy
Scouts of America. Was called Sea Scouts when my Dad was a leader in the 50''s, but was changed to Sea Explorers when I was a scout in the 60s. Speaking from the "old days" the ages were from 14-18.Obviously they''re doing great things with a 90''yawl in the NW. Just be careful if you''re gay.

Sea Scouts

Thanks for the input.

Yeah, back in the day when I was a Scout it was part of the "Explorer" program. Probably a little early to be asking, but my almost eleven year old was curious about the program after a visit to the local Sea Scout Base.

Guess my question really is what are the minimum requirements such as age, etc? Activities? What elements of seamanship are presented or does it vary by location? Are they service oriented and/or does the program focus more on skills development?

Again, thanks for your input.

Eric

Well I have been in sea scouts for 2 years. The program has developed me in ways that I didn''t think possible. Also the friendships and skills that come out of it are huge. I am on Odyssey and Verite. Odyssey is a 90''foot yawl and Verite is a 38 foot french rowing/sailing gig. In order to join the sea scout you have to be 14 and no experience is needed. If you have any questions e-mail me at erin717@hotmail.com

SSS Dolphin

I'm off Chaser in napa CA and was wondering if someone knows anything about the SSS dolphin and if they had any contact info. My crew is trying to locate the Pullboat Trophy and the people that we last known had it were the dolphin out of San Fransico

Smile Sea Scouts

Portland, OR has an active Sea Scouts program. I went out to their base once to look at their (donated) boats for sale last spring. They meet at least once weekly, with many summer sailing ventures; teach the kids much about maintenance & seamanship. A great program for youth interested in boating - whether sail or power. They take boat donations to fix & sell as they learn about boating/sailing.

Well worth their effort to join and learn.
