Ocean Isle Beach NC

Our first trip into the big salt water will be from Ocean Isle Beach, NC. I know the ICW there from years of vacations, but this is our first year with our Spindrift 19 (same as Precision 18). My question is: I''m concerned about getting our between the islands and not being able to get back in till the tide turns. I have a 4 HP that can push our little boat to about 4.5 Knots. Is there someone with experience in these waters? I think the inlet between Ocean Isle and Holden Beach is the best bet.

Thanks, Phil

I am not familiar with that inlet ,but masonboro inlet in wrightsville beach is the best around these parts. High tide , low tide,no worries. Plenty of room to sail right out of with an anchorage right around the corner you wont even need your motor. thomas

I''ve only been through Shalotte inlet in a power boat, so I don''t really know. The inlet south of Ocean Isle at Calabash is Little River. I think that is nice inlet also. Can you trailer closer to there? Or to Masonboro, as mentioned. I don''t think you will see many sailboats usung Shalotte. I don''t think you should even consider Tubbs inlet.

Really appreciate the input. I have motored with rather unseaworthy pontoon boats in the waterway. I have only just "tasted" a bit of the current and waves at Shallotte Inlet and and Lockwoods Folly (north end of Holden Beach). I have been in and out of Little River Inlet many time but only as passanger on 45'' dive boat.

The waves are a concern for me as this is my first attempt. I plan to drop sail, up the centerboard, and motor my way in and out. This way I only need 18 inches of water and think I''ll have better control. I''d like to go for Shallotte Inlet...any advise?

Plans are just to tour in local area.

Thanks, Phil

Just be careful. Probably you''ll have a struggle motoring out against waves, but you can surf back in. Watch out for the fishermen.
