the same GPS is used for sail as well as motor craft. Sailboats with inboard engines will recharge the batteries via an alternator the same as a powerboat. ALMOST anybody can pilot a small motor boat, but sailing is a skill AND a sport.

Sailing is a bit more difficult to do than powerboating, since you are much more at the mercy of the wind and currents... and have to actually plan your passage, especially if your destination lies directly upwind.

Sailing is more about the journey, where as powerboating is more about getting there. Sailing, IMHO, takes far more skill and intelligence than does powerboating...

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

My sailing instructor once said 'powerboats get you from Point A to Point B. When you're sailing, you're already at Point B'.

Comparing sailing to power boating is like comparing making love to jerking off.

You can't compare power boating to jerking off. I love jerking off.

Sailing is like chess - you can learn the basics in a very short time, and then it takes the rest of your life to really become proficient...

Being a rag'n'stick man myself, I agree with all these comments, but I do have stinkpot friends who admire my masochistic tendencies as I admire their waterborne domestic facilities and gin cabinet.

One thing I've been doing is mentioning how I spent "$45 on fuel last season and how I have about six gallons left still" to my powerboater acquaintances... you should see the different colors their faces go through... It's very amusing to watch.
