ASA and US Sailing certifications are about the same from what I can tell. They might get you a rate deduction from the insurance companies, and they are both good to charter a boat.
What I look for in schools, are the boats they use and the instructors. I have been to/seen some schools where the boats are in shambles vs others like new. Are they using the right boat for what is being taught? But most important, it is the instructors that make or break a good school. It could mean the difference between a great learning experience from a bad.
