Finally Got To Sail!
Last Fall I told you all about my new purchase, a 1973 17' Venture. The boat is a BLAST! I was told it would be unstable and I should bring a wet suit...are there any other tips for safe and fun sailing with this boat? So far I haven't needed the wet suit and it seems to be very stable in around 10kt winds. First trip my friend and I were able to sail it right to the mooring.

Just thought I would give anyone who remembers an update. Already loving sailing, more pleasant and quiet than lobstering, can't wait to get a bigger boat and maybe do some travel someday.

Wear a PFD, and you might need a wetsuit, but that depends on where you are. If you're in New England or the Pacific Northwest, then I would recommend a wetsuit... if you're in Pensacola, FL, then you might not need one. :D

I'd also highly recommend you carry a rigging knife... preferably one you can open one-handed... If you get caught in the rigging in a capsize, it could be the difference between making it out or not.

A while back a young girl in Greece was sailing on a small beach cat, and it capsized and no one had a knife... and she drowned. Not good, but was totally avoidable.

I second the above, be careful but also enjoy "learning by doing". This is a pretty good small boat, and the best sailors (seems to me) learned on small boats.

This is actually a small overnighter, so a portable VHF radio (say around $150) would be a good investment. So would a good anchor, chain, and rode. Those two will get you out of many potential scrapes.

Work on your upwind sailing. If you can get good at that, then reaching and running will be a walk in the park...

Have fun, keep learning, and keep asking questions.

It might also be worth getting David Seidman's The Complete Sailor to read.... ;)

I agree on "Complete Sailor" as I read it cover to cover twice before I launched mine.

So far all but the VHF I got with the boat. :) I am planning on getting a radio before I go on any long sails.

PS, I am a fisherman in Maine...when do I not have some type of knife? Haha
