Hi Brett - We went up to the Whitsundays last year for 3 months with my four year old son, Harry. He just loved it.
As our time has always been limited ie. 3 months we always try and get there as quickly as possible. Our best run has been 10 days, our longest run has been 3 weeks.
As it's normally pretty hectic on the trip, we thought it might be a bit much for Harry, we decided for my hubby to do the trip up and my son and I flew in to Airlie Beach. I did the return trip and my hubby minded my son at home.
But as you may be cruising for longer you can take your time to get there. There are plenty of places to pull in up the coast and basically if you choose you can day hop it except for a couple of longer streches. If I was doing this I would feel comfortable taking my son with me.
For our first trip up North my hubby and I didn't have much of an idea so we hired a delivery skipper to help us get the boat there. I'm glad we did as everything that could go wrong did go wrong and it was great that he was in charge and he just took it all in his stride.
I'm not sure about our next big trip yet....we were thinking of buying a boat in the U.S. as the dollar is so strong and sail around the Bahamas for a while and then shipping the boat home. However, thats conditional of our boat selling.
Are you based in Sydney ?? If you are I know a good sailing instructor who operates out of Pittwater with his own boat if you'd like to have some lessons to get started. He was our delivery skipper for our first trip and I can't speak highly enough of him.
Best of luck.
Sarah
