See...that is exactly what I think TB's problem is...his wife is already affraid of heeling, and what boat does he get?? a boat with 10 feet of free board...so high in the water, it gives vertigo even to me...off course she's affraid of heeling...

People sometimes buy boats because of "leg room" inside, then complain about windage, scared wifes, hard to dock, and this and that...etc...people buy boats out of whims (SP)...ahh I like the wood and the head room and the wood...too bad its a dog ot sail..but hey...I can have a whole blue grass band inside....

I am pretty sure (and I don't care what you say), if you keep the wifes, as low as possible in the deck or cockpit, and as low as possible in the boat, (not saying inside) their sense of equilibrioum gets better and they lose the fears.

People often seat on the high side of the boat, because that's the side that is further away from the water...WRONG

Put the scared people on lee side, confortably seated, or on the cockpit floor...you will se the diffrence.

TB, have you realized you're a victim of your own boat choice...big pilot house, large cabins etc...in a boat that size its olny possible with large freeboards....that is probably half of your problem....have you thought about that???

cabin size influences boat freeboard, which influences boat swinging etc...also, a larger boat will heel less, handle better stronger winds and won't woble so much...

Get a lower to the water boat, with a wide beam, sit her down, she'll love it...your boat, altough satble, gives a motion sense of instability, that's why she loses balance and is affraid of heeling...her and everyone else I know that has that problem..

Please note I am not talking about the fear of the water, that's another story.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Thanks Giu - A fairly accurate assessment and pretty much what I already know. Both my wife and I have discussed this many times. But her conclusion is she's afraid of the sport of sailing - due to heeling, regardless of the boat.

My desire of course is to keep True Blue, IF I can find some way of reducing her anxiety. BTW, my freeboard is 5"-6" at the aft deck, 4"-2" +- at side decks . . . still high though.

TB, what I have been doing is having Mechele helm the boat on light wind days, start with a reef in the main, even if one is not needed, maybe even go no headsail sometimes, keep the boat level, and teach her she can control the boat.

Buy two Macgregor 26 hulls and attach them to the sides of TB, and use them as amas.

Another great video Alex!!!! You have an amazing way a makng the basic techniques easy to understand and to apply.

Mechele was happy to hear that more outhaul in breeze can reduce the heeling of the boat!! She was disappointed though, no Giu's "squeel like a pig"!!!

Giu...good job! You've done very nicely with everything I taught you!! (g)

One thing you might do is combine your backstay and outhaul advice into very light, light, medium and heavy wind settings in a table for easy reference.
I'm just trying to keep you busy and away from the photoshop software!
