This summer, a friend brought his new Patin de Cataluna.

Its a narrow beam catamaran with no rudder. You steer with the same principle, but with one mre particularity. On the Patin, you have a line that allows you to control mast rake (see the lines on the bow of each pontoon to the mast), and thus allow the mast to pivot for better steering.

These are indeed very very fast boats, you need an ensemble of weight shifting, sail trim, main sheet, rahe and boom jack control.

Here is the boat I sailed this summer. I want one.

Patin de Cataluña

PATIN

And here

Let me tell you...you're not a sailor until you can do a racing triangle with one...I fell 3 times in 3 days sailing it...but because you keep the sheet in your hand you pull yourself back fast...what a blast, it makes you a better sailor...guaranteed.

By day 2 I was seating down, and lifted the pontoon...I WANT ONE!!!!!!

If someone here is interested in selling these in the US we cold make a partnership.

Giulietta,

Of what material are the hulls constructed? Are these Patins built at a factory, or are they home built from kits/plans? The hulls look like they would not be too difficult to build, especially if there is a kit.

I would love to try sailing one.

John, they are 100% wood. The best of the best of the best are made by a guy in Spain, and he sells them complete for around 8.000 euro, if I'm not mistaken.

But you can build your own, and in fact there is a guy in Holland that builds them semi-professionally. He fell in love with them and this is all he does now..

I am sure you can build your own, do a search online for plnas, and if you can't find, send me a pm, I'll get my friend to help. He's from Spain. I'm buying one, soon.

The Saint Laurence River Skiff was a boat that was steered by balance alone. You could sail at any course including running and tacking just by moving your weight around the boat. They were very pretty boats with a centerboard and no rudder. The centerboard was a fan type and expanded when you lowered it. The centerboard case didn’t take up much of the interior because of this unique design.
All the best,
Robert Gainer

Giulietta: Thanks for the reply. I like that they are made from wood -- easier for a homebuilder. If I can't find plans online I'll contact you.

Robert Gainer: How does the centerboard of the St. Lawrence Skiff work? You said it was a "fan type" that expands. I'm having trouble envisioning that?

Have you seen someone fan out a deck of cards? You slide out the aft edge while holding the forward edge and you get a triangle that expands at the aft edge while pivoting at the forward end. If you look at the link you will see the seams and size of the case.

Giu.. may I suggest you post each video under its own thread? That way they won't get buried in an unrelated topic and they can be more quickly accessed by those who are interested in that particular topic....

Edit... never mind, I see you already did!!
