I use a tether with a 6' and 3' lead, that way, I can clip on one before releasing the other.

One comment I might make is that knowing the weather forecast, I would have reefed down to whatever I thought was necessary, before dark. I'd rather lose some time/distance, and be prepared if I knew a blow was coming.

BTW, that's another good reason for a two-leg tether.

Also, if on a longer passage, reefing at dusk is often a good idea... since your ability to see is compromised, going a bit slower is probably not a bad thing.
