Question An American in Korea who wants to learn...

Hello all,

I've been a lurker on here for a little while but I felt it might be best simply to ask my question outright to get the best advice. I thank you in advance for any help you can provide!

I'm 35 and an American BUT live in Korea. I do a lot of world travel and have sailed with my father in the U.S. a bit over the years. I can do basic crew tasks but am certainly not ready to skipper my own boat. All that said, here is my question.

As an American living abroad, and who has a TON of interest in learning how to sail, what is the best route to go? It seems that US Sailing and ASA are only options in the U.S. As well, I'm curious on how well certifications from either of these groups are respected worldwide.

Thanks so much!

I'd bet there's a sailing community in Korea in any sizable coastal area.... hang around there and indicate your willingness to learn.. volunteer for any race crews that are shorthanded.

It's usually pretty easy to get that kind of experience. From the owners point of view reliability and being there every week will outweigh experience and qualification. He/she is usually willing to provide that part.

ASA and USSA certifications are helpful, but not necessary. An RYA certification would be far more valuable IMHO...and recognized in more of the world.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.
