CliffL is on a distinguished road
Last year I paid an instructor a couple of hundred bucks (plus some beers) for an afternoon helping me with the intricacies of docking. Money well spent. One of the technicians at the brokerage where I bought my used boat went over all of the systems with me for the price of a few cocktails. We're now buds.

Asa

Last year I wanted to get certified so I can do a charter in the Caribbean. From what I have heard I may not need official certification but wanted to make sure for myself I knew everything I should.

I went through the ASA web site directory of instructors and found a really good one. I took the 3 courses up to Bareboat Chartering and was very happy with it. The instructor was very knowledgeable and a great teacher. If he is any indication of the overall quality of ASA certified instructors you can't go wrong.
