Gosh, with all that said, why does everyone think this is a bad idea for going to south america? Is it the comfort level, or treacherous weather, shallow waters, or what? I still have a lot to learn

No problem, Faster. I had heard of a couple incidents, but you make it sound like this is very common. Do you have pointers to any documentation that I could read up on?

Its not a matter of it capsizing, its a matter of it righting itself after it goes over. Boats designed to race, like the j24 have very flat bottoms, good for speed, bad for comfort. You go over the waves instead of through them in an open sea. They are great boats, and there are J boats that will perform well in open water, just not that one.

For those with short memories, the following thread may provide some much needed background information, and further the discussion with Tom in a positive direction.http://www.sailnet.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38891

Do enjoy and learn its a great boat for day sailing and racing around the cans one beats me regularly but don't go to sea in it ! I watched one sink 2 years ago after a knock down on wed night racing fortunately there were plenty of us around to help.
