I selected Formal training ASA, since we took a class before we took our boat out the first time, but we did buy the boat before we took the class.

I also started crewing about the same time to speed up the learning curve.

Re: How did you get your start in sailing?

Started day sailing with my family as a kid on the St. Lawrence Seaway in Quebec Canada on a 16' Maurauder (built in France around 1960). Little sloop with no equipment except for an easy to foul furling jib. Did a little dinghy sailing at summer camp and with friends. Enjoyed a couple of bareboat charters in the Carribean. Have been kayaking and boating in the PNW for last 25 years. Finally bought my own sailboat a Cal 2-27 which I hope to take N to the Broughtons. Would love do do it singlehanded. It seems ike a good time in life for an adventure. I need to be more familiar with the hardware on the boat before this becomes a reality though. Lots of posters say just do it???!!! Opinions??

Re: How did you get your start in sailing?

Never even got in a sailboat until last year at the young age of 45. A friend at work took me out on his Pearson 30 and I was hooked.

Shortly thereafter I found an Albacore on Craigslist and picked it up cheap. Fixed her up and sailed on Lake Huron. Things happen fast on the Albacore, so I learned quickly. After slamming sideways into the breakwall a couple times, and mistakingly going out in 30+ knot winds, I've come a long way.

I acquired a Cal 21 a couple months ago. I've been refurbishing her in hopes of getting her out soon. Can't wait.

Unfortunatly I could not vote. none of the categories fit.
sugest a additional category.
comercial. eg merchant marine, fishing or simmillar
Also Sail Training Vessel.
For me Merchant Marine, followed by Sail Training Vessel Crew.
prior to aquiring own boat

Re: How did you get your start in sailing?

At summer camp was my 1st experience, the following summer we camped near a marina on the Hudson and spent every chance I had getting on anything with sails. Dreamed of a sailboat for the next 15 years. have had 4 boats, and just picked up a replacement hull for my busted boat...8 years is to long to be of the water.

Re: How did you get your start in sailing?

Bought ŗ Hunter 34 , asked P O to show me how to motor out of the slip and then back and took it from there .
That was 12 years ago , and after thousands of miles and a bigger boat... Still learning everyday!

Re: How did you get your start in sailing?

By the way, I note with interest that although 'crewing for others' is often cited as a good way to learn how to sail (I've always been a little dubious of that suggestion), less than 5% of sailors here at Sailnet learned that way (summing the 'crewed around randomly' and 'mostly through racing' replies).

Re: How did you get your start in sailing?

Back in 2005 I owned a 26ft Blackman Sportfisher, trailered it 800 miles down Baja and anchored offshore for a month fishing, diving and surfing. I was in heaven, but all these larger boats kept comming through Mag Bay where I was anchored and we'd talk of their destinations. My boat had a 4 hundred mile range, they were heading to central america, the caribbean, south pacific, tonga, circumnavigating......I sold the power boat a month after getting home and 3 months later bought my 44ft ketch. Never sailed once prior to that day, but a whole lot since.....Life Is Good

Re: How did you get your start in sailing?

I was bit by the sailing bug as a kid during a trip with some family and friends in the BVI; took a 5-day ASA class in San Diego in my 30's and bought a small and inexpensive weekender about a year ago... now its all about trial and error on a lake in KY and reading everything I can get my hands on!
