Sailing Schools in Metro Detroit

I'm a very newbie and want to get lessons before the investment (I'd rather practice on some schools boat before I have my own). Can anyone suggest good (relatively inexpensive) schools in the Metro Detroit area for sailing lessons? If the courses will even help lower potential insurance rates that would be even better!! Does anyone know if taking one of these type of courses also qualify for the boater's safety course the State of Michigan requires? Thanks!

If you want lessons the two major governing bodies of sailing schools in the USA are ASA and US Sail. You can google sailing schools or go to their websites and find something local. Or to learn on the cheap check a local recreation center or Junior College.

Looking to buy a 30-37' boat before learning to sail would not be the recommended course of action by most folks who have made the journey to becoming competent sailors.

Agreed, that's why I started on a 42


Get to the Detroit boat show this wekend and look around. If you miss it, there might be a spring show at Metro Beach, Last time I was there, I saw several sailing school booths. I'm pretty sure they were certified.
