Best Sailing School in Los Angeles Area

Hi All,

My girlfriend and I wants to buy a boat within 3 years, and take a 1 year sabbatical to cruise in the Pacific.

I am looking for a good sailing school that could teach her sailing up to offshore passage making skills.

We are living close to Marina Del Rey, but I am open to hear suggestions in the greater LA area. If you know of a school that you would recommend, I'd love to hear it. I found all the schools that exist around and have my preferences, but I want to hear first hand the experience of people (especially women) who have taken courses and would recommend a particular school.

If you prefer to IM/email me directly, that is fine.

I very much appreciate any help. A good school can make all the difference for her to continue to be excited to go.

Thanks
Philippe

Hey there,
I came across this post of yours and then looked at your subsequent postings on this forum. Looks like you are living your dream. Nice!

I was wondering what sailing school you ended up going to in LA. I'm in Venice and am trying to decide which of the ASA schools to go to. I sailed in High School and now i'm in my late 30s, working hard at my career, and now thinking about re-entering the sailing world. I know enough to get me into trouble so I'd like to start fresh and get certified.

I'd love to hear about your experience.
Thanks.

Jake,

If you sailed in High School and live in Venice than zero need to take any paid sailing lessons. Buy yourself an old Lido14 for a few grand and join the Lido fleet in Marina Del Rey ( aka Fleet 2) - you will quickly get very competent, plus meet some very helpful and friendly sailors.

send the class president a note ( Steve Potter ) who happens to be a MDR Lido sailor. Tell him you sailed in high school and want to get back into it. His email will be on class website below:
