hwlovett is on a distinguished road
I'm amazed that most of these people ever leave the dock.

1) I understand that you understand boats and can use the engine and have at least driven a motor boat.

2) That you have studied a basic book on sailing.

so

1) Pick a warm, sunny day with less than 10-12 kts wind.

2) Take a friend and a cell phone.

3) Put up the main sail. Why not?

4) Head up wind (learn to point and tack).

5) Talk through what you are going to do before you do it.

6) Enjoy your first cruise/take pictures.

7) Don't go too far and return long before dark or if the wind/weather even looks like it will change.
