I suppose one should also mention that a boat can pound or slam as well. It needs to pitch "some" and to impact the water gracefully enough so that it doesn't slam into it and lose momentum either. Hobbyhorsing is just one ill-mannered form of bad pitching motions.
Making a hull that will move gracefully in all three dimensions and three axis is why hull design is still as much an art as a science.
