Don't overlook the importance of the book work. You can gain a lot of useful information before hitting the water and put it to good use during the hands on portion of your training.

Completely agree with Tempest. I've taken both US Sailing and ASA up through Advanced Coastal Cruising over the years. Some schools simply suck and others may surprise you if you end up with an amazing instructor. Homework is so critical. I had great results with ASA schools that received ASA school of the year many times over the years. I think they stand out amongst the others.
