Some single handlers put up a falshing strobe when they hove to at night. . It's not in the rules but it helps recogntion and in the open ocean no one's going to delibreately run somethinig down. Others make a point of catching sleep during the day. An AIS transciever would make sure you appear on thier radar.

I think a flashing strobe is illegal on US ships (Coast Guard Regs), but maybe if your life depends on it, break the rules.

Another Question that somewhat goes with this thread, say I want to circumnavigate via cape horn, what would I do about insurance? What do most people do? I would think the policy for one year would be the value of my boat.
Regards

It is coming. It is the part of the Obama's stimulus package. It will help out poor and benefits the riches. I think he should do more, put a few thousand cell towers in the Pond so we don't need to rent satellite phone anymore.

Most people are self insured, aka no insurance

For a variety of reasons a "flashing strobe" is NOT a good idea - but an all-round white anchor light is. ..and is required by the rules.

If you are going to heave-to at night, turn OFF your nav lights (because, technically, you aren't moving) and turn ON the anchor light.

IIRC, an anchor light is supposed to be suspended in the fore-triangle, but any kind of all-round white light, high up in the rigging will do. Many cruising yachts have an "anchor light" permanently wired for this purpose.

Sea Anchor?

If you're in >200ft of water, you can heave-to or put out a sea anchor to reduce drift. Look up sea anchor or parachute sea anchor. There are a few other things you can do to reduce drift as well. In other words, yes it's possible to almost stop a boat while at sea.

As far as clearing customs goes, check with your country's officials before you leave (get all required paperwork). When you arrive at a new country's port, fly the "Q" flag (a yellow flag). This lets customs officials know you haven't cleared yet. Yes, you can expect to pay some fees...but may get lucky depending upon the country.

Financing a boat is up to you. Some people get loans, some pay cash. Depending upon your state's laws (& how crafty you are ), you can expect to pay sales tax (10% +an arm, +a leg ). Don't forget you may also pay additional taxes depending upon your county and city.

Hope I helped,

Skipper, J/36 "Zero Tolerance"

This is illegal. A hove-to vessel is underway.

The word “underway” means that a vessel is not at anchor, or
made fast to the shore, or aground.
