L.A. to Portland, Or

Hello all,
I am in the process of purchasing a 35' Hallberg Rassy in southern California. My experience is limited to day sailing out of New Port Beach, Ca and crossing to/from Catalina aboard my father's Catfisher 32'. With the help of my father (who's experience is a bit more extensive than my own), I would like to sail her up to Portland, Or as this is where I live (and Or has no sales tax ).
What can you tell me about this stretch of coast (in July)? Is it particularly daunting? So much so that it makes for a poor first venture out of familiar territory? How long would you expect it to take as a straight shot?

Most will tell you (only half joking - if that) to go to Hawaii first!

This is not a preferred route, it's going to be primarily up-wind and up-current so the only 'straight shot' would be to motor it all - assuming conditions would permit that. It's a long slog that, even in July is going to be chilly once you're north of the California border. Add unreliable bar harbours into the mix as well.

Doable, at least you're not trying this in November! but probably not going to be 'fun', at least not all the time - and on a new-to-you boat??? Another red flag.

Most boats make that trip on the back of a truck..... just sayin.....

Well I can't say I didn't expect such a reply. Was a little haste to post as I found a nice thread on the matter via cruisersforum.
Thanks for the reply.
