Storm cells follow a consistent local pattern - if you check the weather channels website and go to Lightning strikes, you will notice the lightning (ie storm cells ) will march along a relatively straight line.

One can try and visually guess the precise direction, but difficult because of the up & downdrafts and confusing wind patterns generated by storm cells.

Local knowledge and experience is paramount here.
