Jib sheet position

So, on my previous boat I just had one genoa track. On my new boat I have a genoa track on the rail and a fixed jib block further up inside the shrouds. However, even with my 100% jib sheeted in tight, the sheet rubs on the shroud. If I fall off, it would rub more. If I need to sail off the wind with jib, do I need to put the sheet outboard of the shrouds and go to the rail track?

How can the sheet rub on the shroud if the block is inside of them? Do you have a picture? Are you sure you're leading your jib sheets correctly?

I'll have to take a look at it again. It is rubbing on forward lower, and the clew on this jib is really high, so the shroud angles in a bit. It doesn't really rub if it is sheeted all the way in. But, if I ease the sheet a bit it rubs. I need to take a look to see if the sheeting angle will be OK on the track further back.

You will benefit from using the jib track which allows you to adjust the sail shape mainly the leech twist. Presumably while it is on the rail it is at the right angle, ie it is fairly narrow boat. The sheets go outside the shrouds. The inner block may well be for a storm jib.

You'll need to go close hauled and check the tell tails. If they break very close to the same time, then you have it positioned correctly. Do some more research on jib car positions, then take some pictures close hauled and post them.

Jib sheets will sometimes rub on shrouds of some sport boats when they're eased, but most spend their time closed hauled so it's not an issue. And judging by your pic, that ain't a sport boat.

On second thought, if the clew is that high, do you think it could be a staysail?

Could be. It was on the boat when I bought it. Other than a high clew, is there any difference between a stay sail and a jib? I'm not sure what it is called, but there is a big 'belly' on the foot of the sail. It essentially has more roach on the foot than my other sails. That part is really baggy, and flutters. Actually the whole luff sounds like a helicopter... maybe this sail is a pile of crap and needs to be turned into an awning!

SWAGs -

1) the 100% might be too big for inside the shrouds, the boat might use a 85% to be rigged inside

2) Have you played around with adjusting the jib lead fore and aft ?

I'll try to get some pictures when I'm out tomorrow.

That is part of the problem. When sheeted inside the shrouds it goes to a fixed block. There is a track further aft on the rail for sheeting the genoa outside of the shrouds. So, I suppose with a fixed block, there really is only one sail size that would result in the correct sheeting angle.

Wow, that was a perfect day on the water! Anyway here are a few pictures of my set-up. In the first picture the sheet is eased a little. It would rub a little less if it was sheeted in tight. In the next photo, even the jib sheet line to the winch seems strange, in that it rubs on the cockpit coaming. I could run it all outside the shrouds to the track, but I think it would be too far back for the 100% jib. I didn't get any good pictures of the sail shape.
