Cameron,

I realised you were talking about chartering a boat for profit (as boatlord) not chartering a boat to go for a sailing holiday as the tenant. To qualify as a charter skipper you would need the full Yachmaster Offshore endorsement.

My concern with Nautilus is that they were originally re insured through I think GIO (if not GIO then one of the biggies) but now it is done through an unidentified LLoyds syndicate. Maybe that is OK but it concerns me somewhat. CLub will insure anything as long as there is no risk.

TD, in hindsight I guess I was replying more to Ian than St Anna - just didn't want anyone to get the impression you needed qualifications for a bareboat charter..

Must check my Nautilus certificate.. but perhaps I'm too accustomed to insurance brokers ways to worry about it much - and just hope whomever it is at that second coughs up the $$ when (if!) I ever need them to.

Bent: Getting your RYA Yachtmaster would be well worth your while if sailing and the sea is where your interest lies. For a taste of it, do a YA Safety and Sea Survival course first up - since this is will allow you to crew on any of the major long-distance passage races up to and including the Sydney-Hobart and is a requirement for Yachtmasters anyway:

Pacific Sailing School at the CYC in Rushcutters Bay are running their next course on 24th September: http://www.pacificsailingschool.com.au/
