Stepping the mast

Very, very new to sailing after time in powerboats. The one area that worries me the most is stepping and unstepping the mast. I am in process of purchasing a Macgregor 22 and want to do solo sailing. I am no kid anymore - retired plus - but in very good health/strength.
Anyone met the same challenge - and how did you, if you did, overcome it?

Stepping the mast

The easiest way is to go to a marina that has a winch. Place the line from the winch around the mast at the lower part and make sure that it runs under the stay cables and fetches up under the spreaders. You then lower the mast onto the mast step. It takes 2 persons, one to operate the winch and the other to set it on the step. Keeping the line taunt, you can then put on the back stay, fore stay and shroud cables. It should be done loosely. Once these are secure you can take the line from the winch off. Then tighten up the turn buckles according to the specifications of your boat. If you don''t have them there is a McGreagor discussion group at this site that can help you. Unsteping the mast is done the same way. Hook the winch line to mast as indicated, make the line fairly taunt, loosen and undo the turn buckles. Haul it up and your done for another season. Hope this is of some assistance.

Stepping the mast

If you post where you are, there may well be someone in your area that reads this board, and will be happy to give you a hand getting started. I would guess it is possible to step that mast by hand but you will no doubt need help each time. Once you know how to go about it the help does not have to be a sailor, just a friend or nieghbor that is willing to give you a hand for 15 minutes.

Stepping the mast

Bob, I just sold my 22 Mac last year. Although I am in my mid 30''s, I am very thin. I was able to step the mast solo a few time, but more often than not, I was offered help by a fellow sailor. I suppose it all depends what the atmosphere is like at your marina. Good luck and happy sailing.
