taking kids out in summer

New to sailing. My wife and I both took our 101 course. We have a 5 and 2 year old and I am dying to get the family out on a sail in Galveston bay. Our instructor "strongly" recommends waiting until September when it cools down and the wind is better. Am I being too anxious at the risk of my kids being miserable and not wanting to go out again? I don't want to wait until September as I am so excited about this new way to have family time.... Should I take the advice of someone considerably more experienced and objective, or go now? I am leaning towards now, but my wife wants to wait per the instructors sage wisdom....

Your instructor recommends September because it's cooler and the winds are better. Wait for a day that's not too hot and has winds around 7-10 kt and voila -- September in July!

Re: taking kids out in summer

We sail Galveston Bay with our kids who are now 3 and 1.5 years old. It does get very hot for them (especially with their pfd's on). But we still sail in the summer, just not as often, always early in the day and are headed in by lunch. The winds are usually pretty light, but that's how we like it when we go out with the kids anyway. Just make sure you are comfortable sailing the boat because it's not always easy to pay attention to the kids and the boat at the same time.

Sailing on the Chesapeake bay I'd be hesitant to take young children out this time of the year for the same reasons your instructor had, high temps, little wind.

Thanks for the advice. We decided to compromise an find a babysitter while we go out together. It will give us some experience without worrying about the kids, and we can deal with the heat....

Re: taking kids out in summer

Good idea using the sitter for your first few sails. I used to take my kids out in the summer but I had lots of shade under the bimini. I also made a point of anchoring out and letting the kids swim. It does get very hot down here on Galveston Bay in the summer and picking the right day is important. Summer thunder storms are common so watch for them, they can be quite refreshing while on the hook though.

Re: taking kids out in summer

I'd think the risk would be fright from a screecher of a thundersquall rather than warm boredom. Whatcha sailing in? If the boat's heavy enough you'll get through the squall but make sure the kids are clicked in in addition to wearing lifejackets.

If you can avoid the squalls (they still happen in September too, you know) then why not give it a try now if you have a decent breeze for a couple hours. If it dies, go 5 knots under power, it's cheating but will cool everyone off a little.

Re: taking kids out in summer

1. Go at night
2. Go at daybreak but be sure to be off the water by 11am

That's how I get through these miserable Southern Summers.

@nolatom - we are just renting by the day for now. We are going to probably look into fractional ownership in the winter for a year or two before we look at getting out own boat.
