Adult Dinghy Beginner
Hey all

Im looking to get into dinghy sailing on lake whatcom and maybe in our bay in Bellingham WA. I have experience windsurfing, i think i can self teach how to sail a small dinghy.

Would a laser perfomance bug be too small for a 5'10" 175 Lb guy who is just learning and not looking to race? If not any other suggestions? I like the simplicity of a boat like this and a new one is in my price range. I dont really like the board style laser/sunfish; i would like a little clearance from the cold water in the NW.

Also looking at the topaz taz.

Any advice for a newb to the sport appreciated.

There are probably lots of boats that would be similar. You would save a lot of money buying a used boat that is well cared for. It wouldn't have the "new boat smell"

adults can sail one but it will be bit small. when the wind is up you will get wet in one. you will outgrow it very fast and can't take anyone but a small kid with you. when sailing any dingy in cold water you should be wearing clothing to survive being in the water in case of a capsize. The Laser is a good boat and not all that wet, nothing like a sunfish. the TAZ is also a bit of a kids boat

Thanks for the advice :)

Appears these boats would be a bit small for me, would a Laser Pico be a better choice, I do like the durability of the rotomolded boats. I don't really want to race, i dont need the lightest or fastest boat.

You are correct that i could probably find a nice laser for much less than any new boat, im just worried about hull durability, I am good at breaking my toys

Also i am factoring a dry suit into my purchase, i already have a 5-4 wetsuit and gloves and boots and a lifeacket from windusrfing
