ASA 103/104 etc on our boat.

I would like to build my wifes confidence in sailing our Bristol 35.5 on the Chesapeake. She prefers to take the lessons on our boat rather then at local schools. Any suggestions of good ASA certified instructors who can be hired for this task ? We sail out of Magothy river. Thanks in advance.

David Renoll of R & R Charters (based at Mears Point)

Great instructor, very knowledgeable, and enjoyable to work with. Also has experience with sailboat deliveries.

Well, I would highly recommend Jport. The Admiral really wanted to be a better sailor and able to do things on her own w/o the Capt. telling her to do something. She did alright helping me but I was basically singlehanding w/ an extra set of hands. I told her I could teach her but she'd be better off in a structured environment w/ a syllabus.
So the 6 day class at Jport was her Bday present. Even at her age (on the backside of 50) she took their keelboat class and was banging out tack after tack in the J80's this past fall in 20 + knots and LOVED it. The first 2 day weekend she was sore and thought she hadn't learned anything. Then the next two weekends she felt it all came together; like it all finally "clicked".
Now maybe your Admiral isn't real athletic and you need to be to sail a J80. But I can guarantee ya, she'll have a blast.
And the WHY of sailing will make a lot more sense.

Are you thinking of two instructors...? That would be a waste of money, and two captains on one boat doesn't work. I dont think the sex of the instructor matters a whit, although the personality and style does matter a lot, but those are not defined by sex.

I believe that you'd have to work through an ASA affiliated school to obtain an instructor. Instructors are usually independant contractors who work for the school. Generally The affiliated school via ASA is the issuing agent of the credentials, not the individual instructor. I'm sure a school would be willing to provide an instructor for you to learn on your vessel.

In short, I think it's a two-part solution. Finding an instructor that you can work with and then finding out which school they are affiliated with.

Penny Renoll is also an instructor (also of R & R charters). I am not sure how often they co-teach. Classes that I have participated in included husband/wife couples and everyone enjoys the classes, learns the material, and appreciate David's teaching style and professionalism. Bottom line is that David will help both you and your wife become more competent sailors both individually and as a team

Thanks everyone. I was only thinking of one instructor and thought that perhaps my wife would enjoy a female instructor better. At the end the quality of instruction is most important.

Hey Endoit

Stop by some time, I'm just to the right of the MR / 2/ 15 triangle off Focal point.

Our Irwin 38 Center Cockpit is close to your boat, my wife might split costs with yours for these lessons.
