heating and conditioning

Hi,

I am planning to buy a new Jeanneau SO 45 in June 2006. Is there anyone who can give me some information about 16000 BTU air conditioner is good enough( or not enough) either for heating or cooling? Genset is 6 KWA and dealer says that it is enough just for conditioner. Do you have any experience on this subject? Meanwhile do you think to fix "Vebasto" heater is more useful instead of heating with conditioner which needs more than 6KWA genset?
I would like to have your kind experiences if you are living aboard.

Thanks,

merhaba Kamil

The genset should be enough to do the job.

With a boat that size, I would recommend the installation of two smaller air conditioners. It gives you redundancy, better cooling and is often easier to install.

Cheers,

I have a 5 KW genset that puts out 42 amps. I run a 16000 BTU reverse cycle air conditioner/heater and it only uses about 16 amps.

A 6 KW generator should be putting out close to 50 amps so you could run several units.

Generators like being run at about 75-80% of max. Don't oversize the generator. I also run other appliances to get the amps used up over 30.

Thanks Jeff,

It sounds that 6 kwa genset will be good enough. I dont oversize it if my wife dont bring her laundry machine and drier on board. :-)

All the best.

Kamil

I have a 43DS and i have two of the heating/ cooling units. One is 16000 and the other is 12000.

Although the answer depends on your cabin layout, I would think that you will be better server by two units as I am.
