Live aboard question

I know this question is most likely asked all the time, but if one had a dream to live aboard a small sailboat, how do you go about finding a boat and a dock to live aboard. I currently live in the south east and would like to find a lake that I can live on without having to be a millionaire. Willing to relocate to where ever possible. Any hints or websites to get started on this journy? Many thanks and happy sailing-

What state are you in in the Southeast. I am currently in SC and have a boat on lake murry and one in Charleston harbor. At our marina at lake murry we have several liveaboards and it isn't too expensive. It also is nothing fancy either.

Lake Murray is just outside of Columbia, SC by about 30 minutes to the NW. We are at Winward Point Yacht Club/Marina. There are a couple other ones as well...Lake Murray Marina and Columbia Sail Club. Columbia doesn't have live aboards though. It is a good size lake with a couple of island in it. I cant recall How big it is. Here are the links for the two marinas that will let you live aboard. Winward point will be cheapest but really no frills.

Kestral....where in NC are you? I would suggest that if you want to cruise and sail and not merely live aboard at a dock, you should think about bays and rivers rather than lakes. There are all sorts of marinas and little towns around the Albermarle and Pamlico sounds and the rivers that feed them and many have some liveaboards. You will QUICKLY tire of sailing on a lake but bays and rivers let you explore and see new horizons while still sailing in protected waters.

May I suggest you look in the New Bern area? There are many sailors that call this home. Sailors spend their winters in the Bahamas and Carribean. By June 1st, we must be North of the St. Mary's river due to insurance issues.
Also, there are some sailboats for sale in this area...
If your looking for a sailboat, check sailboat trader.
When we decided to buy a part time live aboard, need room...full galley with oven and gimbel. 2 heads. Confortable aft bed.
We did our own upgrades. This way we could add what we wanted.
Good luck in your endeavors.
