Ive got a direct tv dish mounted on a piling by my slip... it works fairly well, just seem to go through cables more often because we have about 6 foot difference between high and low tide. Ive given serious thought to droppin the tv and get satelite internet... since most of the main channels (cbs/nbc/abc/fox) display most of their popular shows on their website... just watch them from their.

I've seen a number of dishes just mounted on a pole in a 5 gallon bucket filled with gravel, as well as on pilings and directly on the boat.

Consider getting a HD tv ready tv. You'll be amazed at the quality of local local tv stations you can get if you are just getting cable for local.

Covered in one of the 12V TV threads in the maintenance and gear section...The Polaroid 15" I have gets tons of local station in both high def as well as over air with no real special antenna...

Thanks for all your answers! This may be an obvious question for most of you but, does the antenna require a power supply? If so, do you plug it in on board? The dock?

Rather...no...the antenna has no powersupply BUT the BOX for the channel changing does. There are both 12V and AC versions available.
Antenna is simply the dish and a cable to attach to the channel changing box.

The only catch with Direct TV is $$. They are really pricey, and if they find out you're putting the thing on something that's mobile, like a boat or RV, they want the subscription money up front.
