Slips from San Diego to Long Beach

I am a single 25 year old and am buying a 1988 Catalina 34 and will hopefully have it within the next 2 weeks. I was wondering if anyone knew of any marinas that may have available slips for a liveaboard? I am open to anywhere from San Diego to Long Beach as I have friends in both places.

Not sure about the San Diego area but going north would be Oceanside (forget it, no slips), Dana Point (year wait list), Newport (slips available but $$$). Huntington Beach is not sailboat friendly (bridges) unless you have a tabernacle (sp) mast. Then the three marinas of the City of Long Beach, Shoreline, Rainbow and Alamitos Bay. I was on a wait list for 6 months before I got my slip in Shoreline. Then I got on a list to move to Alamitos Bay where I am now, I was on this list a year. Your best chance for a quick slip is one of the marinas around San Pedro like Cabrillo Marina and then get on a list where you really want to go. One problem in a lot of areas is finding a slip. Many areas have no real vacancies, but in the last year or so, that's gotten better, as the economy has worsened...

Finding a marina with available slips and that allows live aboards can be quite difficult.

San Diego has several Marinas with LA slips available and even more LA slips without pets

Kona Kai/Kona has slips now and is one of the nicer marina in the Shelter Island basin with good access to open water

America Cup harbor has a new marina with single slips and pumpout at each, I would check them out

Then I would work my way in bay, towards Harbor Island, I think Cabrillo allows LA's but no pets

Thank you so much guys for your insight!! Ill for sure check out Kona Kai, it is a nice place/location to open water. As far as price goes, I just heard back from one of the cheaper places to slip and they have liveaboard, the Island Yacht Anchorage- just north of Long Beach. Has anyone heard of it/stayed and have any pros/cons about it?

Dana Point CLAIMS a year waitlist, but they have alot of open slips....I would also check, Alamitos Bay, Seal Beach and Long Beach...

There was an article in the LA Times two weeks ago that Marina Del Ray is hurting real bad, 700 empty slips...you should have no problem finding a slip for your boat there if you can come up that far...

Dana Point is liveaboard TOLERANT, the boat best be in excellent shape, not show any signs of a liveaboard and be discreet...much better to be under the radar...
