live aboard in SF Bay

I'm working with a broker to purchase a sailboat. Looking for live aboard marinas and general "be ware of's" for living aboard in the SF bay area. I work in Palo Alto, but it seems most of the live aboard marinas on the west side of the bay have long waiting lists.

I've been told that the MO is to buy the boat and then wait until a slip becomes available. That is an expensive option as rent out here is a bit high. So boat, slip and apt rent costs would pinch me, particularly since some of the waiting lists are pretty long.

Any suggestions? What about the east bay? Any good places with easy access to Palo Alto? Safe?

Your best bet would be to buy a boat that is already being used as a liveaboard... and get the slip with it.

Try Pete's Harbor in Redwood city. It's close to PA, and I know there are some liveaboards there; dunno how full they are right now, but the other marinas nearby have slips available (non-livaboard).

OK, thanks for the input.

I'm looking for a particular class of boat, so I don't want to just purchase a boat for the slip. I'll have to take a chance and see what I get.

It varies from marina to marina. I am in the bay area right now, and when the chance comes along. I also ask about liveaboards. It depends on what kind of commute you want. The farther north on the bay the more liveaboards. Try the San Leandro marina. It's probably a 30 minute commute in non commute hours........i2f
